The South East Queensland Regional Plan released on Wednesday requires all dozen councils within its boundaries to adjust their planning schemes and permit higher density development – marking a dramatic departure from government’s former mantra of “saving backyards”. According to deputy premier Steven Miles, interstate migration had caused demand for additional homes while more families are moving into Queensland due to its low unemployment rate and record exports boom.

Brisbane’s inner-city outskirts will feel the brunt of higher density development first, with Brisbane City Council estimated to provide 209,000 out of the required 900,000 new dwellings – but Ipswich, Gold Coast and Logan must also contribute 25% of that growth through new dwelling construction.
