Homes for Queenslanders – New Government Initiatives to Help Families Afford to Own a Home

Queensland offers breathtaking beauty from its shimmering Sunshine Coast shores to vibrant Brisbane and peaceful Ipswich regions, providing residents with many stunning places to call home, including mountain retreats and beachside getaways as well as family friendly communities in suburbia or urban living environments. If you are considering building or purchasing your new home in Queensland here are a few things to keep in mind:

Queensland has unveiled an ambitious new plan designed to secure construction jobs for generations and better housing outcomes for our state’s residents. Dubbed Homes for Queenslanders, this initiative aims to assist families across Queensland afford homeownership while creating safe and stable environments in which to raise children.

Attaining this will require expanding state-wide investments in construction and committing to build one million extra Queensland homes by 2046. Furthermore, support will be increased for those who are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent as well as strengthening our investments in community facilities and essential infrastructure.

Additionally, the Queensland Housing Code will set design and siting standards that meet purposeful design criteria and make council approval easier. This will facilitate faster construction processes with lower costs overall. Furthermore, the Government has created two teams dedicated to expediting decisions and quickly resolving planning issues that impede new housing projects; as well as one dedicated to helping deliver affordable homes through State-Facilitated Development initiatives (SFD).

Woree Residential Precinct in Cairns is one such SFD initiative, providing 490 social and affordable apartments for older Queenslanders looking to downsize. This architecturally designed development will comprise 245 social apartments, 22 affordable ones and 21 specialist disability residences, providing residents with independent living while freeing up larger houses for family members.

Robina will soon see another SFD initiative come to fruition with 30 x 2-bedroom apartments for low income and community housing sectors. These buildings were specially designed to suit tropical living with north-facing living spaces and breezeways to let air in and around their homes.

These projects will be supported by the $2 billion Housing Investment Fund and loan arrangements with Housing Australia and Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility, delivered by community housing providers Tetris Capital, Community Housing Ltd, and FCC Construction Australia.

Finding the appropriate Queensland homebuilder for your project is of utmost importance, so do research builders that best meet your budget and lifestyle needs. You can search a list of licensed Queensland builders on the QBCC website or ask friends and family who’ve built with them about their experiences. Before entering into a contract with any builder, always check if they are licensed and insured through entering their QBCC license number into the search box or searching the Builders Register on that same site.
